Saving money by composting is a great way to reduce your trash bill. It is also good for the environment and your garden. Food and organic waste make up a large part of everyday trash. Having a compost bin to compost the majority of your food scraps is a great way to reduce the amount of trash you put out on the curb each week. Not to mention, it’s a good way to save some money.

What Can You Compost?

There are many things you can compost. Basically any organic manner except meats, like:

Paper
Coffee/Tea grounds
Eggshells
Yard clippings
Fruit & Vegetable Scraps

If you add up these things over the week, it can fill your trash bags up very quickly. Most weeks I don’t have enough trash to put out on the curb. Composting and recycling allow me to cut my curbside pick-up to 26 weeks as opposed to 52 weeks. Now that’s saving money by composting.

What Can You Use For a Compost Bin?

I use two compost bins. One small bin in the house. When that fills up, I empty it into the large one in the backyard. My small bin is just a trash can with a few holes drilled into the top to allow airflow. I bought the large one at my local hardware store. This system works out very well. People have gotten very creative in making compost bins out of many things. One example is Eric over at Garden Fork TV. He has a great video on how to make a compost bin out of pallets. Composting is quite simple. The basic idea is to layer your compost with organic matter and lawn clippings. It is also important to mix and water your compost bin from time to time. If you apply these methods your will compost your matter faster. I am a little lazy when it comes to rotating my compost, which is okay with me. By the time spring rolls around and it is time to spread the compost onto my raised beds, it is ready.
